OOVOOKOO
We transformed a building in downtown Johannesburg into a hybrid studio-gallery space that provides affordable and accessible spaces for creatives. Our aim is to create a thriving, collaborative community that values growth, responsibility, integrity, and generosity - providing rich and nurturing opportunities for our community.
OOVOOKOO means Uprising, and we chose this name as we want to be a catalyst for Uprising within the industry.
We at OOVOOKOO want to elevate value between artists and art buyers, and for everyone to be able to build equity. We are passionate about creating global spaces that encourage and facilitate this and are looking forward to transforming real estate in other locations to empower the reach and impact of our community.
We are proud to represent a range of unique and versatile artists, and a wonderfully inviting, curated experience at our inaugural space in downtown Johannesburg.
OUR SPACE
OOVOOKOO is located in 15 Hulbert Road near Eloff Street, the old shopping heart of Johannesburg Town. This location is rich in history, evident throughout the beautiful structure of the old building, and is a fitting place to begin our journey to help the South African Art Community thrive - the way the shopping hub did for the city all those years ago.
The name OOVOOKOO refers to UPRISING - the wish to make a change to core structures in order to benefit all involved. We have used colour palettes, shapes and designs that reflect this as well as our values, but most importantly - the city we call our birthplace and the community that came before us.
