SAMKELO MATOMELA

Born in 1996 in KwaZulu Natal, Samkelo Matomela's artistic journey found its roots in Soweto, where his passion for art flourished. Seeking to refine his craft, he pursued training at Artist Proof Studio in Johannesburg, specializing in printmaking to elevate his artistic abilities. Painting and drawing serve as the primary mediums of interest for Matomela, whose work is deeply informed by both internal introspection and external observations.

Inspired by his personal experiences and ongoing journey through life, Matomela's art is in a constant state of evolution. His portraits and figures serve as a means of engaging in a dialogue with himself, exploring the vulnerabilities and emotional complexities inherent in navigating life as a man. Through thick layers of paint and impasto techniques, he endeavors to convey the raw and visceral emotions he seeks to express.

The recurring motif of the butterfly in Matomela's work symbolizes hope and transformation, representing the resilience that resides within us all. This motif serves as a powerful reminder of the capacity for change and adaptation in the face of adversity.

Exploring the theme of "hood" as a sanctuary and symbol of strength, Matomela's work resonates with themes of empowerment and survival. By intentionally omitting facial features in certain pieces, he invites viewers to engage with the artwork on a deeper level, allowing space for personal interpretation and introspection.

Focused primarily on portraiture and semi-nude figures, Matomela aims to capture the raw intimacy of the human experience, inviting viewers to connect with his art on a profound and emotional level.
